Out with the Old: Organizing, Updating, and Loving the Little Things

Happy New Year, friends! 🎉 There’s something about January that whispers, “It’s time to get your life together.” Maybe it’s the optimism of a fresh start—or the chaos of trying to shove holiday decorations back into closets that have no space. Either way, I’m here for it!

Coming home after months of living in rentals during our bathroom repairs gave us a whole new perspective. We realized how much stuff we’d accumulated (and didn’t really need) and how little changes could make our home feel more functional and inviting. So, with the holidays behind us, we’re diving into a few small but impactful projects to kick off the year.

The Junk Drawer Chronicles

Ah, the junk drawer. That little black hole of rubber bands, pens that don’t write, and random screws you’re too scared to throw away. We’ve all got one—or five. Sorting through ours has been oddly satisfying, like peeling a sticker off perfectly clean. I already had these clear drawer organizers and some pink ones I bought for my desk but I had extra so ... I put them to use in the kitchen. Remember this you don't have to go out and buy all new organizational tools, you probably have things around the house that you can use.

Pro tip: tackle one drawer or cabinet at a time. No need to Marie Kondo your entire kitchen in one day. A few labeled bins (clear ones are my fave!) can work wonders. I’ve been grouping “keep,” “donate,” and “what even is this?” piles to slowly but surely reclaim our storage spaces. I can't tell you the number of times I had to ask Skott what the random screw, gadget, or piece (of something) was for and if I could throw it away.

Small Updates, Big Wins: Kaitlyn’s Bathroom

While Kaitlyn’s bathroom isn’t getting a full-blown makeover (yet), we’re starting with a few simple updates to refresh the space. First up: installing a new ceiling-mounted shower rod. It’s a game-changer for opening up the space and adding a touch of elegance. Next, we’re hunting for the perfect shower curtain (I've been looking at regular curtains too) —I’ve got my eye on a couple of options.

We’re also eyeing some small accessory swaps, like a sleek towel rack and new faucet. These little updates don’t cost a fortune but make a big impact on the room’s vibe. If you’re in the same boat—wanting change without committing to a full reno—start with one thing that’s functional but could be prettier. (Looking at you, dated towel bar.)

Your New Year Refresh Game Plan

Start your year off with a sense of accomplishment by tackling these small, satisfying projects. Each one is designed to bring order, style, and function to your space with minimal effort and maximum impact.

  • Transform One Problem Area: Whether it’s the infamous junk drawer, a chaotic closet, or a cluttered countertop, pick one space to declutter and organize. Empty it out, sort through what stays and what goes, and create a system that works for you. By focusing on just one spot, you’ll feel an immediate sense of accomplishment.

  • Give Your Space a Style Boost: Upgrade your home’s personality with simple accessories. Replace dated cabinet hardware, hang a statement mirror, or install sleek towel racks to refresh a room’s look. These small upgrades don’t require a full remodel but can make a space feel brand new.

  • Create Order with Smart Storage: Bring calm to your clutter by investing in clear storage bins or stylish baskets. Use them to corral seasonal decor, organize pantry essentials, or tidy up your closets. Choose stackable options to save space and label everything for easy access.
